Three Musketeers: Jesse Boykins III, Theophilus London + Melo-X

jesssseYou don’t have to be a giant cornball like me to appreciate the soulful vocals of Brooklyn based R&B singer, Jesse Boykins III. Equipped with a timeless sound, Jesse “shares a point of view that crosses all genres and generations. Every note and each word in all his recorded works to his live performance is skillfully crafted evoking emotions that move the listener to examine and acknowledge those feelings within themselves.” (Excerpt from his biography). Like all of my favorite R&B singers, he has mastered the art of song writing. In the same vein as the godfather himself, R Kelly, he manages to make songs about absurd subject matter like slanging pantyhouse and likening his love for a certain woman to catching “itis” (a love coma of sorts LOL) sound SEXY and smooth. And hey, it’s one step above comparing the female figure to riding your Jeep and definitely better than wailing “braid my hair” at the end of every ballad. I can’t help it if these references are lost on you, this is foundational R&B history! Lucky for us, Jesse recently dropped his hot fire video for “pantyhouse” and it opens with Jesse unsuccessfully selling pantyhose to women at a salon in Brooklyn. I respect his hu$tle, peep game:

theo1A homie of Jesse’s and no stranger to this blog, Brooklyn based MC and innovator Theophilus London has been keeping busy in the studio putting the finishing touches on his latest mixtape release “This Charming Mixtape” (produced by machinedrum) set to drop this Friday, January 23. In the meantime, Theophilus has been breaking off his fans with a couple of tracks to give us a taste of what’s to come and continue to build the hype! One of his first leaks (via herfection) was for “Grey X Sage (Misty Night)” which can be downloaded and enjoyed HERE. Today, Theophilus dropped yet another bomb promoting his upcoming show “Live from The Black Apple” going down Wednesday, January 21 @ SOBs alongside Mickey Factz + Curt@!n$. Download the hotness right HERE and be sure to check him and Mickey out to keep the inaugural festivities live. As someone who saw both of them rock the stage twice last month, I can vouch for their explosive energy and showmanship. Also, there’s nothing better than seeing two good friends and creative co-conspirators collaborate on a stage and on the mic. Do yourselves a favor and be present @ SOBs this Wednesday! Peep this video of him in the studio:

l_9f0b55924d6d4f7ca799b726d391c2471They say, “a picture never lies”– which is exactly why the above photograph perfectly captures the dynamic spirit and eclectic palette of beloved renaissance man, Malcolm Melo Mustafa X. A jack of many trades, Melo-X can make you a beat, solve your rubik’s cube, take a BANGIN’ photographic portrait of you, and throw you a crackin’ party with a catchy and explosive name like Electric Punanny without even breaking a sweat. With the release of his latest FREE mixtape, Mustafa’s RenaissanceMelo continues to push the limits of possibility within music by blurring the lines of genre and refusing to compromise his unique vision of the world. Unlike many of today’s emcees who promise to put out “cutting edge” and innovative material, Melo actually delivers. After immersing myself in the mind of Mustafa, I can say without doubt or hesitation that Mustafa’s Renaissance ranks as one of the best mixtapes of 2008. With gems like “Keep The Faith” featuring none other than Jesse Boykins III and “Just Me”, Melo bares his soul and brings honesty back in the game. By throwing in experimental elements on joints like “Tehas Rice” and “Tabloids House (Remix)” while revisiting hip hop basics with tracks like “BoomClap” and “I Don’t Rap”, Melo proves he can do it all. That’s right y’all, he’s not just Mickey Factz DJ! Even before I met Melo, I just knew he’d be a laid back sweetheart with a deep love and appreciation for good music and fun times…and HE IS! If you’re reading this boo, I’m serious about bringing you and Jasmine out to the West Coast! It’s time to get bi-coastal, dead ass! For all you NY heads, be sure to check out Melo @ Sway Monday’s with queen bee Jasmine Solano. Consider yourselves OFFICIALLY warned!!! Now, check him out:
