The Youth Are Starting To Change

I have to post MGMT’s latest music video release to “The Youth” directed by Eric Wareheim simply because as creepy and nostalgic as it is, I think it’s quite clever and well done. I would love to know who these four kids are and where they learned to dance. It reminds me of a quote from last night’s CCA lecture presented by Brazilian contemporary artist Vik Muniz (post to come) that read something like: “Childhood is nothing but an acid trip that we’re all trying to get back to”. I couldn’t agree more and I think this video captures that exact sentiment with a whole lot of sequence and style:

Click here for a Hi Res version, say word!

“This is a call of arms to live and love and sleep together
We could flood the streets with love or light or heat whatever
Lock the parents out, cut a rug, twist and shout
Wave your hands
Make it rain
For stars will rise again

The youth is starting to change
Are you starting to change?
Are you?
Together

In a couple of years
Tides have turned from booze to tears
And in spite of the weather
We could learn to make it together

The youth is starting to change
Are you starting to change?
Are you?
Together”

“It Would Behoove You”

I refuse to push DiCaprio’s “non-partisan” PSA to encourage “young America” to vote. It’s silly, condescending, and just plain stupid. Also, an uninteresting collection of celebrities. Also, you know me, I’m not about “non-partisan” anything. I know I’m largely alone on that tip but c’mon y’all it’s no time for diplomacy this close to November 4th. However, I want to do my part to remind folks that the deadline to register fast approaches. I’m guessing the majority of you are already good to go (Shout out to all of you who have been and continue to get your organize on with the Obama camp down South and around the country, mad love and respect forreal, forreal). May you throw the dopest victory parties come November 4th when we better be poppin’ bottles. For anyone who still needs some convincing, let Black Thought and ?uestlove spread the good word (co-signed by the Obama campaign, no worries, this shit is official):

That’s right, “it would behoove you to register” so you know it’s serious

Word up, turn the elephant upside down. Don’t just vote, VOTE FOR CHANGE!!!

Hollywood Moon Tour: Where’s Cudi?

I just walked in the door from the Hollywood Moon show (tonight marked the last tour stop) and yes, this is the closest I’ll ever come to “live blogging” (it conveniently helps ride out the buzz). My sister Nati and I came with absolutely no expectations (which I’m convinced is the only way to approach shows these days) and had quite an interesting night as a result. We both worked late and didn’t head over to Vessel until 11:30, we had trouble finding the joint as it’s is hidden away in an alley downtown. When we finally arrived, Nati realized she forgot her ID(!!!) Now, we were hoping the bouncer would accept her CCA grad school ID and let it slide but clubs are strict these days and we have baby faces and big cheeks. SO, we hopped in a cab (the perks of living so close) and retrieved the ID before heading back. I have to say, one of the highlights of the night was shooting the shit with our cabbie, he was a sweetheart and HILARIOUS. He told us stories of how he collects pictures of epic car accidents that he witnesses on the job. Homie has enough incriminating pictures to fill an art gallery. ANYWAY, we get back to the club, get a drink and start dancing. After 15 minutes of getting down to chopped and screwed remixes of classics like “Poison.” I started to wonder if we missed Kudi and Holt given that it was already 12:15 and the crowd seemed a bit off. I asked the uber hipsters around me and no one knew anything. I mean, fools were black out drunk by this point and barely had enough sense to shrug their shoulders. Finally, some dude told me (as he was simultaneously passing out) “they bailed out and that’s why Flosstradamus is DJing“. That’s right, this poor fella was confusing Million $ Mano with J2K. Let’s do a splitscreen for this one, hmm:

Well, I think it’s obvious that these boys look nothing alike. I get that they’re both fresh to death and from Chicago but really how drunk does one have to be to confuse these two? And yet, he was the only person up in thurr who was even expecting Cudi and Holt (everyone else = Wednesday night regulars at Vessel AKA lots of scantily clad flipina girls shaking their little booties). As I’m scheming to ask someone else, Hollywood Holt takes the stage and announces that Cudi is in the hospital after throwing his voice out from excessive partying. UGH! I was thoroughly disappointed, I was there to support Cudi. I felt for Hollywood Holt because he had to come EXTRA hard in lieu of Cudi’s unexpected absence. I have to give him props for holding it down and getting/keeping the crowd hype when it was obvious no one really knew his ish. He had a couple live tracks like “swerve n’ lean” and “get fresh”. It was nothing mind blowing but I definitely got my dance on! Nati and I were right up front going wild. I tried taking sidekick pics up close but they came out mad blurry and dark. For example:

Sexy, right? Here’s a better idea of what Hollywood looks like:

So yeah, that’s what he looks like. Towards the end he took his shirt off and gave all of us daps before almost falling off the stage (I think someone spiked his vodka cranberry cause that fool seriously lost his balance for a second there). All in all he did his thing and we did our thing. At the end of the day, I can’t complain because it was a FREE show (although when you add up cab fare and drinks…). If you’re reading this Cudi (yeah right), you were sorely missed and we hope you come again soon. I know you’re trying to party like Yeezy but our livers can only tolerate so much abuse. Anyway, our night ended with the bouncer profusely apologizing for giving us a hard time about Nati’s ID and hooked us up with his business card to get into future Vessel parties. Not bad for a Wednesday night, eh? Plus, homie was just doing his job so who can hate? Well my buzz is wearing off and I’m suddenly overcome with exhaustion. Another day, another show. If you haven’t heard/seen any Hollywood Holt or MIllion $ Mano, here’s your chance (they performed the shit out of this one tonight, fasho):

FELA!: A Plea From ?uestlove

Ever since I joined twitter (48 hours ago), ?uestlove has been breaking me off non-stop with new shit from the unreleased Lauryn Hill joint to the subject matter at hand: FELA! Off-Broadway. For the record, y’all should join twitter and add me (my username is: isanaka) because it’s actually mad addictive and fun for no good reason. Here’s the deal: world-renowned choreographer and performer Bill T. Jones collaborated with Brooklyn based Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra on an Off-Broadway production that stages Fela Kuti’s “controversial life as artist, political activist and revolutionary musician” (Source). If that brief description alone hasn’t already sold you, I fear there’s not much else I can do for you because what else could you need or desire on one stage? You certainly don’t come across this type of hybrid cross pollination of genre, sound, movement and performance everyday. It damn near tortures me that I can’t experience Fela! myself– I will be adding this to the shortlist of cons living in San Francisco. Peep this promo video if you still need some convincing:

Do yourselves a favor and check out the video interviews with the “cast and creatives”. I spent the past hour or so watching them and now I want to go dance or maybe audition for a show. Bill T. Jones blows me away. I aspire to be as powerful and moving an orator as him one day. What clarity of mind. But back to business, to the original source: I am deeply impressed with (and profoundly inspired by) Ahmir (?uestlove) and his poetic, urgent, funny and sincere ruminations on “FELA!”. He writes:

“ladies and gentlemen this is ahmir.
its is 5:58am in the morning and i just got home.

i witnessed a miracle tonight and it is a MUST you read this. and when i say miracle you have to think this on the level of sam jackson trying to convince john travolta in pulp fiction to acknowledge the miracle that just occured (them escaping death by *this* much) i didn’t escape death tonight. actually i believe i found life again.”

I urge you to read the rest of his plea for it is indeed a rare thing for someone like Ahmir to be moved to share such an experience with over 211 Industry folks, bloggers and fellow twitters. Surely, he can’t be lying. For all of you New Yorkers I highly suggest clicking here and copping tickets to witness what can only be described as a miracle. We all need a little more Fela in our lives and Bill T. Jones but damn Ana, can you believe we’re missing out on this shit? Enjoy this original footage of Fela:
