Slingshot Hip Hop braids together the stories of young Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and inside Israel as they discover Hip Hop and employ it as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and poverty. From internal checkpoints and Separation Walls to gender norms and generational differences, this is the story of young people crossing the borders that separate them.” — Slingshot Hip Hop

sling_shot_hip_hop_02I had the pleasure of going to a screening of Slingshot Hip Hop in Berkeley last night with artist and friend Evan Bissell. There’s been an internet buzz aroud the film and its featured artists since its January 2008 release at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. This film documents the lives of prominent Palestinian emcees and the role hip hop plays in breaking down the barriers that divide us. Unlike many self-proclaimed “conscious” or “underground” artists based in the United States, the Palestinian hip hop heads hunger for more than just a record deal. The music is simply a soundtrack to their everyday lives. With shows that put even the hyphiest Brooklyn bashments to shame, Slingshot Hip Hop sheds light on the far reach of hip hop in a global community. Go to slingshothiphop.com for more information on future screenings in a city near you and ways in which you can support Palestnian hip hop. Peep the trailer:

HOLY, DATAMOSH JOCKING

picture-531

Mr. West (or one of his shadow bloggers) released the video for “Welcome to Heartbreak” today with the pathetic disclaimer: “we know there is another video out there using the same technique so we were forced to drop it now”. In fact, it’s more of a defense than a disclaimer. Without over sharing the back story behind this “coincidence” as Kanye’s peoples would have you believe, I have to air this ish out! Given that Kanye and Kid Cudi were most likely left in the dark about this datamosh technique jack by their production team, I won’t play the personal blame game but c’mon y’all. I’ve read the overwhelming positive response on Vimeo and Ye’s blog to the datamosh technique used in this video and with everyone heralding Kanye as some kind of creative artistic genius breaking *new* unchartered ground, I think we should get the facts straight. The video Kanye is referring to is the one concieved of and developed by Ray Tintori (known for his MGMT videos) and the homie Bob “the datamosher” Weisz for Chairlift’s “Evident Utensil” which was released 7 days ago. You don’t have to be homies with these dudes to know that jacking their technique is WACK (but not too surprising). Now, we could hate for days but the bottom line is: datamoshing is clearly ground breaking and cannot be attributed to Kanye or any of his people. Kudos to them for taking it to new and interesting heights (because they have the funds and resources to do so) but let’s be clear about who did what, when. PHEW! SO, support good music, good music videos and the brilliant minds working hard for all of us to enjoy. WATCH YO BACK!

10mia_600

mai_1292437cAside from stealing the show at the Grammy Awards with enough swagger to out shine Hova, Ye, Wayne and TI, MIA has been busy using her celebrity as a platform to spark discussion on genocide in Sri Lanka. She recently sat down with The Daily Beast’s Toure to talk in depth about her interpretation of Sri Lanka’s complex history and it’s present political moment. Maya made it clear that she “isn’t trying to like Bono” by exploiting otherwise abstract humanitarian issues to absolve feelings of personal guilt. It comes as no surprise; however, that MIA now finds herself under sharp scrutiny for speaking out. I read through several rebuttals written by highly opinionated blog comentators who argue she is “mispresenting” the situation in Sri Lanka. I stopped reading when they spiraled into convuluted, righteous political manifestos that seemed much more invested in showing off than presenting a counter point. In any case, I think it’s worth reading and listening to MIA’s interviews on these matters not because she is THE authentic voice or authority on Sri Lanka but because she is one of many. Regardless of where you stand, it’s a crisis that is too often obscured while the violence continues to escalate. Peep this:

Gentrified: 1, Gentrifiers: 0

american-apparel-brooklyn-600

When American Apparel announced plans to open one of their shops on Valencia Street, some merchants and residents were less than thrilled. The fight to keep formula retail out of the shopping corridor came to a head at Thursday night’s (02/05) Planning Commission meeting.”Andy Wright, SF Weekly Blog

american_apparel_ad_solares_hill_290808In local Frisco news, American Apparel was recently denied the right to further spread their hipster contagion throughout the shopping corridor of the Mission District. For those merchants and residents who have witnessed the rapid hijacking of their neighborhood, American Apparel crystallized a total takeover and the last step in a long fight against gentrification. While the changing nature of the Mission is old news, this defeat speaks to a growing desire to preserve and actively support independent local businesses now facing extinction. In these difficult economic times, it can feel futile to stand up against corporate forces equipped with the funds necessary to launch an effective (and expensive) campaign. I hope this particular story can offer hope to other merchants looking for viable strategies to protect their space(s) and secure future growth and success. I encourage all my readers to check out the following article in the SF Weekly blog to get an intimate play-by-play of how it all happened! —> “Ok, now that we know the anti-formula- retail faction successfully thwarted American Apparel’s efforts to build a branch on Valencia Street, I figure you’re all dying for a blow-by-blow of the six-hour Planning Commission meeting where the final showdown took place. Well, let’s get on it, shall we?” Read on after the jump!

I’ve been told there are some people upset about some pictures taken of me with friends making goofy faces! Well, I’m sorry if those people looked at those pics and took them wrong and out of context.

In NO way was I making fun of any ethnicity! I was simply making a goofy face. When did that become newsworthy … It seems someone is trying to make something out of nothing to me … I definitely feel like the press is trying to make me out as the new ‘BAD GIRL’

You guys know my heart and know the most important things to me are my friends, family, fans and GOD! In NO WAY do I want to disappoint any of you! But when Ihave made mistakes in the past, I feel like I’ve owned up to them and apologized.”

A “goofy face”? We “know your heart”? *SMH* I don’t even know where to begin but that’s hands down the WORST statement of defense I’ve ever read. I fear for the person or people who greenlighted it. The truth is, Miley Cryus is (and has always been) a HOT MESS and thus I find nothing particularly surprising about this whole spectacle. Although, I must say I’m continually impressed by her *almost unbelieveable* naivete– it’s not like some annonymous hater released this photo on the Internet to spark drama of Britney Spears proportions, SHE voluntarily shared this with the world (most likely to show off her “fun” and “goofy” side, who knows). So no, I’m not turning this into a platform to delve deeply into Miley’s racism and it’s implications for Asian American youth– we’re not brainwashed Miley-obsessed fanatics looking for an excuse to get eye lid surgery, puuuhleeeease and thank you! On the other hand, what’s really good with this token asian homie? I don’t know if I want to slap him or hug him…or both?! Clearly, he runs with the wrong crowd. I say: get out now! At least, before Miley and her posse start getting asian characters for “PEACE” and “LOVE” and “DRUNK” tattoed on their lower back with matching tramp stamp butterflies and lotus blossoms. For these reasons (and general hot messery alerts), I am obligated to add MILEY CYRUS to the proverbial blacklist! She’s just the worst and if you’re not (for some odd reason) convinced by this entire photograph scandal, peep this (or any music video she’s ever done for that matter) HA!:

How Do We Deal?

After reading the following letter from Boondocks creator, Aaron McGruder, in defense of his nuanced analysis of Obama’s Presidency, I was inspired to compile a diverse list of critical voices unearthing perspectives and criticisms that remain buried underneath post-election debris. Read on:

boondocksgg0

“For a long time now, I have tried to keep my opinions on the election and Barack Obama to myself. I occasionally do speaking engagements, which are not open to the press, and unfortunately some of my comments have been twisted around in a silly manner. The claim that I asserted our new President was not Black is categorically false.I have seen an endless stream of Black pundits on TV pontificating about the significance of President Obama’s election – many of them making reference to the 3/5th’s clause in the constitution regarding slaves. The point I was making is that this is not an accurate comparison. Barack is the son of an immigrant, not the descendant of slaves. It’s like comparing a half-Japanese man to the oppressed Chinese who built the American railroads. Yes, they are both Asian, but it is not an honest or accurate comparison. We all share the common experiences of being Black in America today – we do not all share a common history. A history that in part makes us who we are – and in some cases (as with the psychological damage that still lingers from slavery) holds us back.

These are not, I believe, insignificant distinctions. I did say I was cautiously pessimistic about Obama’s Presidency – but this is simply acknowledging the reality of an American Empire that is out of control and on the verge of collapse. Let us not forget that on the eve of the election, we witnessed a near trillion dollar robbery of the US treasury. That robbery is still taking place. I do not blame President Obama, but I do not believe the financial and corporate interests that own and control this country will fold so easily. I do not question the integrity of the man as much as the power of his office – which I believe has greatly diminished over the years. I believe the Federal Reserve Bank, the Military Industrial Complex, and the massive corporate interests that run this country have more power than our new President. I hope I am wrong.

After 9/11, I witnessed the most of this country become obsessed with squashing dissent and silencing critics. I hope this election does not turn Black America towards this same, fascist mind state; but already I am starting to see it, and it saddens me greatly. I absolutely wish our new President and his family success and safety. But after all I have witnessed in my lifetime, and especially in the last eight years, I am not ready to lay down my skepticism or my outrage for this government. To do so would be unwise and, ironically enough, anti-American.”Aaron McGruder

“I was living the dream but now I’m pacing
See things fell apart and now I’m losing patience
Lord, how do I deal?
I’m losing my power
Chasing the almighty dollar
Not just for the greed
Strictly for the need
Lord, how do I deal
waiting for Obama to kick in…”
Dwele “How I Deal”

Cornel West said last March, “I told Obama that when he wins—which I think he will—I will celebrate for one day, I’ll breakdance in the morning and party in the afternoon. But the next day, I’ll become one of his major critics.” –Jeff Chang

“We have overcome. Except those of us now in Gaza. Except those of us whom police kill. Except those of us who are suspects. Except those of us whom the Church hate. Except those of us damned to taste good. Except those of us held by fate. We are meeting in the capitol. Word is, freedom will not wait.

All that once was never shall be.
All they could do won’t be done.
All we sang of is now happening.”

“What’s the black pres. thinkin’ on election night / Is it how can I protect my life? / Protect my wife? / Protect my rights? / Every other president was nothin’ less than white / Except Thomas Jefferson and mixed Indian blood and Calvin coolers / KKK is like ‘what the fuck’, loadin’ they guns up / loadin’ mine too, Ready to ride / Cause im ridin with my crew / He dies – we die too / But on a positive side, / I think Obama provides Hope – and challenges minds / Of all races and colors to erase the hate / And try and love one another, so many political snakes / We in need of a break / I’m thinkin’ I can trust this brotha / But will he keep it way real? / Every innocent n!gga in jail – gets out on appeal / When he wins – will he really care still?” — Nasir Jones, “Black President”

“The present moment has been so diminished in importance that it has become little more than a rehearsal for the future. Present joy eludes us as the present moment is invaded and overwhelmed by hopes and fears for the future. At every turn death invades life.”Larry Law, Spectacular Times, 1983

gettin’ pimped by the system.
Don’t want a piece of the pie,
we want control of the kitchen”
